To first Eruv Map page How to Use The Nonantum Eruv

  • On Friday afternoon, call the Eruv Hot-Line at 781-446-9797 to find out if The Nonantum Eruv is "up" (valid) or "down" (not valid). The eruv may only be relied upon if you determine that its status is "up". The default presumption each Shabbat is that the eruv is "down". Until one makes specific inquiry, one must regard the eruv as invalid.
  • Carrying items that are intended to be used only after the Sabbath ends (such as car keys) is still prohibited, even within an eruv. Carrying an umbrella is still prohibited. An eruv only eliminates the rabbinic extensions to the Torah prohibition of "bringing". It does not override the laws of muktzeh. (Anything that one can't touch on the Sabbath isn't made touchable by an eruv.)
  • If you see a possible or a definite flaw in the boundary, please call 781-446-9797 to notify us of the need for inspection or repair.
  • Please note that the chazaka (the default mode) regarding the eruv is that it is DOWN, not up. You MUST call the eruv hotline before Shabbat to verify that it is up. If you forget to do this, YOU MAY NOT USE THE ERUV until you have hard evidence that it is up.
  • Support the maintenance of the eruv by making a contribution whenever you can. In addition to thousands of dollars of annual maintenance costs, the initial loan of the $12,000 construction cost is not yet paid off.
  • Please send your donations to:
The Nonantum Eruv Fund, Adams Street Shul, P.O. Box 600371, Newtonville MA 02460. or e-mail Michael Walker for more information.
